Hill: Creag Dhubh Mhor
Date: Thursday 2nd January 2014
Company: Myself, Graeme and Penny
Distance: 13.2km, Ascent: 690m
Time: 4Hrs 50Mins

On Thursday 2nd January, Graeme and I set out to Achintee, near Strathcarron, for an ascent of Creag Dhubh Mhor. Thanks to Graeme for driving.

Instead of going out and back the same way, we decided to undertake a circuit of Creag Dhubh Mhor approaching the hill via the Bendronaig path and returning via the Bearnais path.

The weather forecast was poor and the actual weather wasn’t any better.

From Achintee, we followed the sign marked Hill Paths and a short distance beyond, at the path junction, we took the Bendronaig path.

During the walk in, we got reasonable views looking back towards An Ruadh-Stac, Maol Chean-dearg, Sgorr Ruadh and Beinn Liath Mhor.

Loch an Fheoir:

After walking circa 4km from Achintee, we took to the hillside ascending the wide ridge leading towards Carn Geuradainn. As we made our way up the wide ridge, the weather deteriorated to fairly heavy rain with the cloud-level dropping to around 500m.

After passing over several small tops we reached the top of Carn Geuradainn.

From Carn Geuradainn, we continued on towards Creag Dhubh Mhor.

After a brief stop, taking shelter behind the large summit boulder, we made our way down towards the Bearnais path back to Achintee. During the descent we took care to avoid the band of crags to the North-West of the summit. The Bearnais path was not as good as the Bendronaig path. The path was mostly very wet.

The walk out took a bit longer than expected.

A disappointing day compared to the beautiful day we had had on Skye the day previous but a walk in good company nonetheless.
