Hills: Sgurr Dubh Mor and Sgurr nan Eag
Date: Friday 30th May 2008
Company: Myself and Malcolm
Time: 9 hours

Despite ascending Sgurr nan Eag just three weeks previous, I set off to do it again but this time I combined it with Sgurr Dubh Mor.

Parked just outside Glenbrittle car park and set off along the track which starts behind the campsite toilets. We continued along this path heading towards Coruisk, crossing the Allt Coire Lagan and then took the upper path which skirts round the side of Sron na Ciche.

After skirting Sron na Ciche we ascended, steeply at first, up into Coir a’Ghrunda sticking just below the rocks of Sron na Ciche.

A wee bit of easy scrambling took us into the upper coire beside Loch Coir a’ Ghrunda.

After a short break we set off up scree initially towards Sgurr Alasdair and then skirted right towards Bealach Coir’ an Lochain.

Next we scrambled up the North-West ridge of Sgurr Dubh na Da Bheinn to its summit (Grade 1).

From the summit of Sgurr Dubh na Da Bheinn we descended the East Ridge towards Sgurr Dubh Mor passing the initial pinnacles on the right-hand side (Grade 2/3). The final pinnacle, just before Sgurr Dubh Mor, we skirted on the left.

The final stretch of Sgurr Dubh Mor involved more exposed scrambling up a series of ledges on the right-side of the peak. If you can’t see a way up try looking further right.

We returned back towards Sgurr Dubh na Da Bheinn but skirted round below it’s top to gain the South Ridge of Sgurr Dubh na Da Bheinn which led to the base of Caisteal a’Garbh-choire (Grade 2).

While descending Sgurr Dubh na Da Bheinn we saw a helicopter winch someone off of Sgurr Alasdair:

We skirted the Caisteal, on a very easy path, on the Loch Coruisk side, before ascending the North Ridge of Sgurr nan Eag sticking just below the crest on the Coir’ a’ Ghrunda side (Grade 2).

Didn’t take long before we reached the summit of the second Munro Sgurr nan Eag.

Malcolm at summit of Sgurr nan Eag:

From the summit of Sgurr nan Eag we returned several hundred metres before skirting diagonally right down through lots of boulders to reach Loch Coir’a’ Ghrunda (Grade 1). From Loch Coir’a’ Ghrunda we returned out to the car as per our in-bound route. A very enjoyable day with lots of nice scrambling.
