Hills: High Tove and Armboth Fell
Date: Sunday 18th August 2024
Company: Myself and Ann-Marie
Distance: 6km, Ascent: 350m
Time: 2Hrs

Another short walk today after an early morning visit to RSPB Leighton Moss.

Having already ascended most of the higher Wainwrights, I have numerous smaller ones remaining. This has worked out well given current feet issues.

For our ascent of High Tove and Armboth Fell, we had the choice of starting from either the Armboth car park or the Watendlath car park. We opted for the Armboth car park as it is currently four pounds for up to five hours, whereas the Watendlath car park is seven pounds for up to four hours. I do my best to avoid paying the extortionate rates charged by the National Trust.

Route:

The initial track was better than anticipated.

Ascending the lower slopes of High Tove:

We made good progress up the hill thanks to the good track.

Armboth Fell:

The upper trail leading to High Tove is via grass track. Having ascended the neighbouring hills in December 2023, I already knew that these hills were prone to being wet underfoot.

The ascent to the summit of High Tove was not that bad but the same could not be said for the track between High Tove and Armboth Fell. I have read these hills are meant to be the wettest in the Lake District. It was certainly a case of squelch, squelch, squelch with every step.

Armboth Fell has several summit knolls. According to the Database of British Hills, the rocky mound is the summit.

After ascending both Wainwrights, we commenced our return to the car. During the walk back, I heard something tear in my foot, possibly because I have been compensating for other injuries. I suspect this may result in no further hills during this trip. Thankfully I am down for the weekend on this occasion and not for a week.

Return to the car:

A report online suggests these hills take an average of 2Hrs 15Mins. Managing the hills in 2Hrs was not too shabby given we both have injuries.
