Hills: Wether Hill and Loadpot Hill
Date: Saturday 28th December 2024
Company: Myself and Ann-Marie
Distance: 11.8km, Ascent: 400m
Time: 3Hrs 8Mins
The forecast for today was for rain across the Lake
District with the exception of the Far Eastern fells. We therefore made our
way from our base in the Western Lakes back across to the Far Eastern fells
hoping to get the best of the weather.
For our ascent of Wether Hill
and Loadpot Hill, we parked at the start of The Hause track near Moorahill
Farm.
Route:
Waymarker post at start of walk:
After crossing Cawdale Beck, we commenced our ascent towards Wether Hill
via The Hause.
Bridge over Cawdale Beck:
Our ascent via The Hause was pleasant; a nice gradual incline up the
fell.
Ascending The Hause:
Ascending The Hause:
During the ascent there was much low cloud but we were able to sneak a
peak of Haweswater Reservoir.
Looking down to Haweswater Reservoir:
Once into the cloud we made our way from Low Kop to High Kop and then
across to pick-up High Street, the course of an old Roman road. Once on the
old Roman road, we continued along to the summit of Wether Hill which is
featureless terrain a short distance above a small cairn.
Ann-Marie
at the cairn just below the summit of Wether Hill:
Cairn just below the summit of Wether Hill:
From the cairn on Wether Hill we continued along High Street towards
Loadpot Hill.
Ullswater from Wether Hill:
Ascending Loadpot Hill:
Shelter/ruin en-route to summit of Loadpot Hill:
According to the Database of British Hills, the summit of Loadpot Hill
is 80m SW of the trig point.
Looking towards the Loadpot Hill trig
point from summit area:
At the trig point on Loadpot Hill:
As there were numerous tracks leading from/to the trig point, I took a
bearing to take the track directly back towards our starting point. The
track back to the starting point is marked on my 1:25000 OS map but not my
1:50000 OS map.
Descent via Hart Hill:
The descent via Hart Hill was also pleasant, like The Hause, and it
didn't take long before we were approaching Carhullan and Moorahill Farm.
Approaching Carhullan:
Another enjoyable walk with the weather better than forecast.
Apologies that most trip reports this year have been from the Lake
District despite this site being the 'Mountains of Scotland'. 31
Wainwrights to complete the round before my focus will be closer to
home.
