Hills: Great Carrs, Swirl How and Grey Friar
Date: Thursday 16th October 2025
Company: Myself and Ann-Marie
Distance: 8.8km, Ascent: 516m
Time: 3Hrs
Due to there being limited parking at the top of the
Wrynose Pass, we skipped hotel breakfast this morning
, to
arrive there before sunrise.
We set off walking fifteen minutes
before sunrise.
Route:
At the start of the track there is a waymarker post indicating, 'Wet
Side Edge 3/4 mile'.
Waymarker at start of track:
After negotiating some stepping stones to cross a short section of boggy
ground, we commenced the ascent via pitched steps.
Ascent from the
top of Wrynose Pass:
The excellent path allowed for fast progress up to Wet Side Edge. There
was no hanging around today
.
Looking back to car at the top of Wrynose Pass:
On gaining the wide Wet Side Edge ridge, we continued to follow the path
and numerous waymarker cairns towards Great Carrs and Swirl How.
On
Wet Side Edge:
Unfortunately, unlike our two previous walks this week, we did not
manage to break through the cloud into sunshine with cloud inversion.
Instead we would be walking in cloud with no views
.
Approaching Little Carrs:
En-route to Great Carrs we ascended Little Carrs.
Summit of
Little Carrs:
A short distance beyond Little Carrs, we reached our first Wainwright of
the day, Great Carrs.
Summit of Great Carrs:
On descending from Great Carrs, we passed a memorial cairn and wreckage
from a Halifax Bomber LL505 FD-S which crashed on 22 October 1944 killing
all eight crew on board.
Wreckage from Halifax Bomber:
From the memorial cairn we continued round the rim of the coire (Top of
Broad Slack) to reach the summit Swirl How.
Summit of Swirl How:
From the summit of Swirl How, we returned to the memorial cairn and then
undertook and out and back to Grey Friar.
Heading out to Grey Friar:
The summit of Grey Friar has two cairns. According to the Database of
British Hills, the SE cairn is the Wainwright. Regardless, we visited both
cairns.
At the summit of Grey Friar:
Second cairn atop Grey Friar:
After returning to the col, we took a path skirting round Great Carrs
and Little Carrs to again reach Wet Side Edge.
Herdwicks:
We then returned to the car as per our inbound route.
Looking
across to Pike of Blisco during return walk:
This walk was shorter and easier than expected allowing us to spend the
afternoon at RSPB Leighton Moss.
